Get BACk Challenge Events

Children at the Easter Sports Camps Here is some of the activity that has taken place over the past few months as part of the BDO Get BACk Challenge and activity generated from funds raised from the 2008 event

Easter Camps

Over 60 children from Southill, Moyross and St Marys Park have participated in the Easter Camps run this Easter with great success.  A real Limerick partnership with Limerick City Sports Partnership working with Munster Rugby, GAA and the FAI to deliver a week of activity throughout the city.  This is the first time the children in these areas had the option to participate in such a structured programme of sports activity. The purpose of the camps is to offer the children sport on their doorstep. Local sports facilities and schools will be utilised and children will be encouraged to join their local clubs, after the camps, thus encouraging lifelong participation in sport and physical activity.

The Get Active Easter Camps will include taster sessions in Multi Sports, Soccer, GAA and Rugby. All Primary School Children must have registered for the Sports Camps through their schools

Sports Conference

Dr Niall Moyna and Brian Cody - Speakers at the Sports Conference Last October the BDO Get BACk Challenge hosted a sell out sports and coaching seminar in Thomond Park Stadium Conference facilities.  The Coaching & Sports Performance seminar attracted a high calibre line up of speakers that included Brian Cody, Tony McGahan, Dr Niall Moyna and the nutrionalist for the Irish olympic boxing team. A total of 930 coaches and parents have attended the annual coaching event.

Cheque Presentations – Clubs

Thirty three sports clubs and organisations have benefited from a major grant and sponsorship programme funded by businesses in Limerick.  The BDO Get BACk Challenge presented grants of almost €50,000 to a wide range of clubs across all sporting codes in addition to groups catering for children with disabilities.  A further €60,000 has been contributed for the organisation of sports and activity programmes for socially disadvantaged children to encourage greater levels of participation in sport.  The funds were raised through the BDO Get BACk Challenge which organised a major cycle and walk event in June which attracted cycling legends Greg LeMond and Sean Kelly.  To date over half a million euros has been raised by the BDO Get BACk Challenge in the past three years.

Cheque Presentations – Hospices

In addition to the funds for the sports projects, cheques for over €30,000 were also presented to Milford Hospice, Cahercalla Hospice and North Tipperary Hospice to fund palliative Home Care programmes in the region.  The event is organised through BDO Simpson Xavier and a number of event partners across the Mid West.  In the past two years 57 clubs have received grants from the Get BACk Challenge fund.  A recent audit conducted by Limerick City Sports Partnership revealed that almost 4,000 children benefited from the grant and activity programmes over the past year.

Munster Rugby Supporters Club

The Munster Rugby Supporters Club last month donated a very generous cheque for €5,000 from the proceeds of their pin badge sale for the Munster versus All Blacks game last November.   Glenn Flanagan and Ian Buckley from the Supporters Club presented the cheque to the Get BACk Challenge at their succesful quiz night in their new Members Bar in Thomond Park Stadium.  A framed signed Get BACk jersey in Munster colours signed by Greg LeMond is now hanging proudly in the Members Bar as a token of appreciation for this years and previous support by the MRSC.  The funds supported the running of the Easter Sports Camp in three areas of disadvantaged in Limerick City providing children from these areas access to a structured Easter Sports Camp for the first time.
